Privacy Policy

Last updated October 8, 2026. This policy covers bookangel.io and the BookAngel browser extension.

BookAngel publishes content ratings for books so a reader can see what is in a book before starting it. This page explains what information the website and the extension handle, why, and the choices you have.

Who we are

BookAngel operates the website at bookangel.io and the BookAngel extension for Amazon book pages. You can reach us through the contact form.

Information you give us

Account. If you register, WordPress stores the username, email address, and password you choose. The password is stored in a form that cannot be read back as the original password. A community profile can also include a display name and anything you choose to post.

Supporter membership. Paid memberships are handled by MemberPress and the payment processor connected to it. BookAngel receives your membership status and the email on the account. BookAngel does not store your full payment card number. The payment processor’s own policy covers the card details it collects.

Contact form. The contact form asks for your name, email address, and message. We use that to reply. We do not add you to a mailing list from that form.

Book requests. A request stores the book’s Amazon ID (the ASIN) and, if you are signed in, the account that sent it. Supporters can ask for a book to be rated next. Kindle Unlimited books can be queued without a membership.

Information collected automatically

The host and WordPress record ordinary server logs when you load a page. Those logs can include your IP address, the page requested, the time, and the browser type. They are used to run the site, limit abuse, and fix errors.

Pages may load typefaces from Google Fonts. When that happens, your browser contacts Google, and Google receives the IP address of the request.

The site can show advertisements and loads a script that checks whether an ad blocker is active. BookAngel does not sell your personal information to advertisers.

Browser extension

The extension runs on Amazon book pages you open. It does not run on other sites.

  • Website content. From the Amazon page you are viewing, it reads the book’s ASIN and whether the page shows Kindle Unlimited. It sends the ASIN to bookangel.io to look up a rating or to request one. It shows the rating, category counts, and a link to the BookAngel review when one exists.
  • Authentication. If you are signed in at bookangel.io and you request a book, the extension sends that existing session cookie and a short-lived security token so the site can tell that the request came from your account. The extension does not ask for or store your password.
  • Return link. “View review” can pass the current Amazon page address to bookangel.io so the site can send you back. That address is stored in a cookie named bookangel_return on bookangel.io. The cookie is limited to this site and is not sold.

The extension does not collect your name, health information, financial information, messages, location, browsing history beyond the Amazon book page you are rating, or a record of your clicks for advertising. It does not use remote code. It does not sell data, use data for purposes unrelated to showing or requesting a rating, or use data to determine creditworthiness or for lending.

Amazon links

Links from BookAngel to Amazon can include the affiliate tag bookangel-20. If you buy through that link, Amazon may pay BookAngel a commission. Amazon receives the information described in Amazon’s own privacy policy. BookAngel does not receive your Amazon password or your Amazon order history.

How ratings are made

A rating is a content advisory, not a review of quality. To produce it, BookAngel reads the book and keeps short samples of passages that contain the words being counted, plus the word counts. Those samples are used to judge context and to write the public note. The public book page does not display the passages. Notes censor hard-to-read words, keeping the first letter and replacing the rest with asterisks.

How we use information

We use the information above to:

  • show content ratings and category notes
  • create and protect your account, and recognize a Supporter
  • process a book request and a contact message
  • send you back to the Amazon page you came from
  • operate, secure, and fix the site and the extension

We do not sell personal information. We do not use it for credit, lending, or purposes unrelated to running BookAngel.

Cookies

  • WordPress and MemberPress set cookies so you can stay signed in.
  • bookangel_return stores the Amazon page to return to after you open a BookAngel review.
  • The host’s cache may set a cookie to serve pages faster.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser. Signed-in features and the return link will not work without the cookies they use.

Who receives information

  • The company that hosts bookangel.io, as part of running the server.
  • MemberPress’s payment processor, when you pay for a membership.
  • Amazon, when you follow an Amazon link.
  • Google, when your browser loads a Google Font.

We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect the site, its users, or the public from harm or fraud.

How long we keep it

Account information stays until you delete the account or ask us to delete it. Book requests and published ratings stay while the rating is useful on the site. Contact messages are kept long enough to handle the request. Server logs are kept for the period set by the host. The return cookie expires on its own.

Your choices

You can close the extension panel, remove the extension, and stop using the site at any time. You can ask us, through the contact form, to:

  • tell you what account information we have
  • correct it
  • delete the account and the email and name attached to it

Published ratings describe books, not you, and are not deleted as personal data. A book request can be removed on request.

Children

BookAngel is written for parents and other readers choosing books. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new date. Continued use of the site or the extension after that date means the new version applies.
